| Oxnard College’s McNish Gallery presents Solo Exhibition by Artist Janet Neuwalder now through December 9, 2009 – “Intentional Nothings,” a solo exhibition by Ventura County Artist Janet Neuwalder featuring wall works and sculptural installations opened Wednesday, November 11, 2009, with a reception and artist’s lecture. Ms. Neuwalder’s installations are modeled after the anthropological displays commonly found in natural history museums. A ceramicist as well as an installation artist, Neuwalder uses historical, personal, autobiographical and appropriated images as mental and visual markers that map and launch the arena for the viewers. To create her pieces she uses earthenware, porcelain clay and raw materials like branches, leaves, straw, fibers and paper that act as armatures for the clay and resulting in a mysterious topography that is simultaneously delicate and permanent, ephemeral and beautiful, according to McNish Gallery curator Christine Morla. Neuwalder received her M.F.A. in ceramics from Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy of Art with a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute. She has taught ceramics at many art departments including Pitzer College, Pomona College, Cerritos College and Long Beach City College. Currently, she is teaching at Oxnard College. Neuwalder ‘s work has been featured in publications such as The Studio Potter and Ceramics Monthly. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and most recently in Los Angeles at the Brand Library Gallery, Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery, and Angels Gate Cultural Center.
