OC MARINE CENTER & AQUARIUM PRESENTS HARBORSIDE SPEAKER SERIES
Steve Howard of the United Water Conservation District will lecture on "Southern California Steelhead: A Story of Survival," on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 2 p.m., as part of the Oxnard College Marine Center & Aquarium Harborside Speaker series at Channel Islands Harbor. Dee Anderson of the Marine Center said the presentation is free and open to everyone. Steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout that have adapted to arid, drought-prone conditions an intermittent migration opportunities. Steelhead in Southern California are grouped into an Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU) for classification purposes under the Endangered Species Act. The Southern California Steelhead were listed as endangered in 1997. Howard will describe the impact of humans and the environment on Steelhead and will share data from the Freeman Diversion Fish Passage facility on the Santa Clara River to help understand the current population status of these historic and unique fish.
