REYES HIRED TO COACH WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL AT OC
Reynaldo Reyes is out to prove that you can go home again.
Last week Reyes, a 1984 graduate of Hueneme High School, took on the job of coaching the fledgling Oxnard College Women's Volleyball program after Lori Rice decided to take a break from coaching. Rice, whose Oxnard High School girls' volleyball team had reached the CIF-Southern Section quarterfinal last fall, had been picked to recruit players and establish the program earlier this year, said OC Athletic Director Jerry White.
Reyes has been assistant volleyball coach at California State University-Los Angeles since 1996. Last year he finished the season as head coach of both the girls and boys volleyball teams at Westlake High School. The Westlake girls’ team made it to the conference semi finals and the boys’ team advanced to the conference finals. In addition,
Reyes currently coaches the Renegades Volleyball Club in Westlake and has been the assistant coach of the 18-1 Nike team.
Raised in Ventura County, Reyes attended Santa Barbara City College and Sacramento State, where he played football. He completed his undergraduate degree at Cal State-L.A. and assisted volleyball coach Bill Lawler for four years as first assistant. He also served as head volleyball coach at Hueneme High School from 1992 to 1996. Since 1991 he has coached at the Pepperdine University Marv Dunphy summer volleyball camps. Dunphy gave Reyes a strong recommendation when the coaching position re-opened.
“I’m excited to return to the community where I went to school and I look forward to establishing a community college volleyball program from the ground up,” said Reyes.
“I want to reach out to Huenene, Channel Islands, Oxnard, Camarillo and Rio Mesa high schools, where there is a lot of exciting talent,” he added. “I want to build support for the college volleyball program by talking to the senior athletes and letting them know about the opportunities they have to further their education at Oxnard College.”
Reyes will offer a summer volleyball class at OC beginning June 18 and also plans two summer volleyball camps in early July.
With the recent addition of women’s volleyball and softball programs to OC athletics, the college will offer six women’s sports and five men’s sports in 2002. |
