ANNUAL OC AWARDS CEREMONY HONORS STUDENTS, STAFFOutstanding students, faculty and staff members were honored and more than $25,000 in scholarships and academic awards handed out at the 25th annual Oxnard College Awards Ceremony held Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Mandalay Beach Resort Hotel.
During the banquet Oxnard College students were awarded scholarships and academic honors were presented to students who will transfer to universities or plan to continue their studies at Oxnard College.
Recipients for the “Big Six” awards were presented to those faculty, staff, student and community members who were nominated and selected by their peers.
The awardees were:
q Mathematics instructor Alan Hayashi, winner of the Mark Dever Award for Excellence in Teaching - Full-time Faculty;
q Part-time journalism instructor Doug Feldman, winner of the Wallace Stevens Award for Excellence in Teaching-Part-Time Faculty;
q Counselor Linda Conti, winner of the Teresa Archuleta Award for Excellence in Service-Non-Teaching Academic Staff;
q Publications specialist Augie Castaneda, winner of the John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee;
q Hotel and Restaurant Management student William Dufrain, winner of the Frank Gilbreth Award for Outstanding Service by a Student Leader.
This will also be the third year in which the William Simpson Award for Excellence in Service to Oxnard College will be presented to a friend and supporter of Oxnard College. The winner is Dr. Lillian Manning, CalWORKS Services & Career Coordinator for Oxnard College.
In addition, there was the presentation of a Special Recognition Award for Excellence to Dr. Don Low, Interim Dean of Student Services, for his dedication and initiative in tackling many projects to improve services for students attending Oxnard College.
The Mark Dever Award was named after the OC journalism instructor who died in an auto accident in 1983. Other nominees for the award were instructors Michael Bowen (mathematics), Carmen Guerrero-Calderon (business), Elissa Caruth (English), Mary Pinto-Casillas (office occupations), Luanne Crockett (chemistry), Desmond Jones (retired-political science), Linda Kamaila (anthropology), Gary Morgan (journalism), Jose Ortega (auto technology), Dr. Leroy Robinson (television production) and PACE instructor Karen Sutton (English).
The Wallace Stevens Award was named after the famous American poet who, as a part-time teacher, promoted creativity in the classroom. Other nominees for the award were James Demattia, Amy Foote, Betty Sahota and Pamela Schroeder.
The Teresa Archuleta Award, named for the late EOPS counselor and coordinator who served Oxnard College for more than 20 years, recognizes the Outstanding Non-Teaching Academic Employee. Other nominees for the award were Harry Culotta, Gloria Lopez Espinoza, Mike Gregoryk, Don Low, and Dr. Priscilla Partridge de Garcia.
The John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee was named after the brilliant English poet whose blindness was no handicap to his genius as an author and a statesman. Other nominees for this award were Lynda Barry, Gina Brenner, Laura Burwick, Augie, Jeff Hiben, Sandy Pack, Linda Porter, Debra Rundell, Ila Sachs, Barbara Smith, Jan Straka and Ernie Villa.
The Frank Gilbreth Award for Outstanding Service by a Student Leader was named for the famous American efficiency expert. Other nominees for the award include Blanca Canales, Beatriz Gonzalez, Rosalinda Gutierrez, Lina Lagerstedt and Demistra McCoy.
The William Simpson Award for Excellence in Service to Oxnard College, was named after the longtime Oxnard civic leader and VCCCD trustee who was considered "the father of Oxnard College" in his unwavering support of the establishment of Oxnard College in 1975. Other nominees for this award were Teresa Elenes, Dr. Kalani Jose, Ralph Smith, Ed Sotelo and Gloria Lopez. |
