| In celebration of National Poetry Month, award-winning poet Patty Seyburn visited Oxnard College April 2 to read from her published works as part of the Poets & Writers’ sponsored “Sweet Cakes and Poetry” program for the ongoing Oxnard College Scholars’ Lecture Series.
Oxnard College students will also have a chance to read their own original poetry to an appreciative audience as part of the Third Annual All Student Poetry Reading on Monday, April 28, from 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in the LS-8 (Clocktower) Auditorium. To reserve a spot, students can sign up to read by e-mailing poetry reading coordinator Shelley Savren at ssavren@vcccd.net or calling her at 986-5800, ext. 1951.
The students are invited to read an original poem or two, one to two pages long, on any topic. “Students are especially welcome to read poems on the subjects of war and/or peace,” Savren added.
Ms. Seyburn, who teaches writing at USC, read poetry from her latest books, “Mechanical Cluster,” published in 2002, and “Diasporadic,” which won the American Library Association’s Notable Book Award and the 1997 Marianne Moore Poetry Prize. Ms. Seyburn’s poems have been anthologized in American Poetry: The Next Generation (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2000), and American Diaspora: Poetry of Exile (University of Iowa Press, 2002). |
