OXNARD COLLEGE “LITERATURE, ARTS AND LECTURE SERIES” SCHEDULE SET FOR SPRING 2009
In order to preserve the distinctive nature of the Oxnard College guest speakers series, the program has been renamed the “Oxnard College Literature, Arts and Lecture Series,” beginning this 2009 spring semester. Speakers will be commemorating African American History Month in February and National Poetry Month in April and are scheduled to appear in the series that begins Wednesday, February 18, 2009.
All events will be held on Wednesdays and begin at 12:45 in LS 8 (Clock Tower Auditorium). The series is sponsored by Oxnard College with additional support by Poets & Writers, through a James Irvine grant. Poet and world traveler, Suzanne Roberts, will read from her books, Shameless and Nothing to You, and her forthcoming book, Plotting Temporality and will talk about her journeys as a writer who documents her travels through poetry.

Sounds of the Ancient Americas
Musician Martin Espino will play indigenous percussion and string instruments and will teach the audience songs from ancient languages of North, Central and South America, especially from ancient Mexican cultures, including Mayan culture.

Rhonda Carlson and Raquel Montes will discuss the daunting challenges faced by children who grow up in the foster care system – who are removed from their homes at young ages, are placed in custody of the state and are then released at age 18.

OC English Professor Elaine Alarcon-Totten will show images of the Nickolas Muray’s 20th century photographs of the famous Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, and will talk about the story behind the photos, including the relationship between Muray and Kahlo.
