33rd ANNUAL OXNARD COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES TO BE HELD MAY 14, 2008 AT TRACK STADIUM
Outgoing Oxnard College Associated Students Government president Sergio Lagunas will represent the Class of 2008 in an address to an audience of family, friends and trustees of the Ventura County Community College District during commencement exercises to be held Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in the Oxnard College Track Stadium.
The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m.
With approximately 445 students eligible to receive their Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, about 300 students are expected to participate in the ceremonies. In addition, approximately 205 students who have earned their Certificates of Achievement after completing vocational programs will participate in the commencement ceremonies.
Lagunas, who was recommended by a committee lead by Oxnard College speech instructor Amy London, will speak for his fellow students and will thank those who supported his efforts to earn a college degree. Lagunas, of Oxnard, will be attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, this fall and is a member of the OC Theatre Arts Club. He has also worked as an English tutor and his goal is to become an English professor.
Welcoming the graduates will be Oxnard College President Dr. Richard Durán, VCCCD Chancellor James Meznek, Dr. Larry Miller, Chair of the Governing Board of the Ventura County Community College District, Vice Chair Robert Huber and trustees Art Hernandez, Cheryl Heitmann, Stephen Blum and student trustee Lorraine Hawes. Other dignitaries expected to participate in the ceremony are OC Interim Executive Vice President for Student Learning Lyn MacConnaire, Vice President for Business Services Tim Oliver, OC Academic Senate President Scott Corbett and OC Classified Senate President Monica Zavala. Conferring degrees will be Dr. MacConnaire, who will invite Chancellor Meznek and the Trustees and Dr. Corbett to congratulate the graduates.
OC faculty members David Magallanes, Linda Chaparro, Jim Merrill and Mary Pinto-Casillas will announce the names of the estimated 300 candidates who will receive degrees for General Liberal Arts and Sciences programs and those students who earned Certificates of Achievement for completing vocational programs. This year each student has been given an opportunity to prepare a 10-word message of thanks to family, friends and instructors. The messages will also be read aloud by the four faculty members. The program will also include the Pledge of Allegiance by Sergio Lagunas and the national anthem sung by Moorpark College math instructor Rena Petrello. Sign language interpreters will also translate the proceedings.
