| “ALL COLLEGE DAY” KICKS OFF FALL SEMESTER AT OXNARD COLLEGE
During the "All College Day" observance on Friday, August 17 the Oxnard College “Excellence in Service” awards were presented to those faculty, staff, student and community members who were nominated and selected by their peers based on their service and dedication to the campus.
The awardees were:
Oxnard College art instructor Christine Morla, who also serves as curator of the McNish Gallery, was the winner of the Mark Dever Award for Excellence in Teaching - Full-time Faculty; Part-time mathematics instructor Hugo Viveros was the winner of the Wallace Stevens Award for Excellence in Teaching-Part-Time Faculty; Oxnard College EOPS Counselor Ross Fontes was the winner of the Teresa Archuleta Award for Excellence in Service for Non-Teaching Academic Staff; and Oxnard College Public Relations/Marketing Specialist Catherine Garnica was the winner of the John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee.
Also honored were faculty, staff and administrators with over five years of service to students; over 10 years; over 15 years; over 20 years; over 25 years; over 30 years (including some founding faculty) -- Sandra Allen, John Andrich, Frank Castro, Ron Cook, Margarita Corral, Carolyn Dorrance, Vincent Flocco, Jr., John Greer, Juan Hernandez, Sandy Iverson, Christine Mainzer, Liz Nava, Tom O'Neil, Gary Rigsby, Betty Sahota, Ralph Smith, Jerry White, Dr. Evangeline Wilkes, Beverley Young; and over 35 years, including founding faculty and staff members originally from other campuses -- Carmen Guerrero, Floyd Martin, Lyn MacConnaire, Neil Ziegler and Cherri Ziegler.
Upon returning to campus, OC President Richard Durán served as umpire for the first annual “Slo-Pitch, Slo-Run” Softball game pitting the classified staff “Blue Team - Icy Hots” against the full-time and adjunct faculty’s “Mean Green Teaching Machine.” The “Greens” lead 1--0 most of the game until the “Icy Hots” rallied in the seventh and final inning with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory. Both players and spectators enjoyed the contest and the hot dog and hamburger lunch that followed.
Much of the success of the day was due to the organizing efforts of the Oxnard College Morale Boosters Committee for planning and organizing the entire schedule of events : Jeannette Redding and P. Scott Corbett, Co-Chairs, Connie Owens of the OC Foundation, Monica Zavala, Kenneth Bailey, Karla Banks, Susan Cabral, Jose L. Cornelio, Ishita Edwards, Linda Faasua, Cathy Garnica, Alan Hayashi, Betty Hough, Chris Schmidt and finally, thanks to the fantastic M.C., Mary Jones.
