Volunteers are needed to help coordinate the “Dia de Los Ninos y Cesar Chavez” educational event to be held Thursday, April 25 at Oxnard College.
About 700 to 800 fifth-graders from the Oxnard Elementary School and Rio School districts will be brought to campus by bus to tour the Oxnard College campus and then enjoy a staged performance of folklorico dancing and theatrical skits featuring farmworker songs presented by Oxnard’s Teatro Inlakech and the MEChA Club of Oxnard College.Event organizer Jaime Casillas, Dean of Off-Campus Programs at Oxnard College, said that the volunteers are needed to guide the students and their teachers around campus before the entertainment begins on an outdoor stage.
“This event is just one of several that will be sponsored by the Ventura County Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning Organization,” said Casillas. “It’s a day of college enrichment, fun and cultural activities,” he said. Oxnard College is working in collaboration with LULAC and the City of Oxnard’s Employee Association, which has pledged major financial support for the event. The observance of Cesar Chavez’ birthday in Ventura County will include the Commission for Farm Worker’s Rights Memorial March on April 23 in Oxnard.
