ANNUAL OC AWARDS CEREMONY HONORS STAFF, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS
OXNARD, California—Outstanding students, faculty and staff members were honored and more than $60,000 in scholarships and academic awards handed out at the 28th annual Oxnard College Awards Ceremony held Sunday, May 1, 2005, at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard.
During the banquet Oxnard College students were awarded scholarships and academic honors were presented to students who will transfer to universities or plan to continue their studies at Oxnard College.
Recipients of the Oxnard College “Excellence in Service” awards were presented to those faculty, staff, student and community members who were nominated and selected by their peers based on their dedication to the campus.
The awardees were:
q Oxnard College English/ESL instructor Mati Sanchez was the winner of the Mark Dever Award for Excellence in Teaching - Full-time Faculty;
q Part-time philosophy instructor Doug Thiel was the winner of the Wallace Stevens Award for Excellence in Teaching-Part-Time Faculty;
q Oxnard College Deaf Services Specialist/Sign Language Interpreter Ila Sachs was the winner of the Teresa Archuleta Award for Excellence in Service-Non-Teaching Academic Staff;
q Oxnard College Instructional Lab Technician Jan Straka was the winner of the John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee;
q Oxnard College student Ernesto Carrillo, who helped organize the OC Mathematics Club, was the winner of the Frank Gilbreth Award for Outstanding Service by a Student Leader;
And 2005 marked the seventh year in which the William Simpson Award for
Excellence in Service to Oxnard College will be presented to a friend and supporter of Oxnard College. The winner, Oxnard College Financial Aid Director Patricia Gage, recently announced her retirement after serving Oxnard College since 1985. The William Simpson Award was named after the longtime Oxnard civic leader and VCCCD trustee who was considered "the father of Oxnard College" in his unwavering support of the establishment of Oxnard College in 1975. The Mark Dever Award was named after the OC journalism instructor who died in an auto accident in 1983. Other faculty nominees for the award were Toni Allen (Journalism), Elissa Caruth (English), Lynn Fauth (English), Chris Horrock (Philosophy), Linda Kamaila (Anthropology), Amy London (Speech), Andres Orozco (Multimedia) and Colleen Ryan (Mathematics).
The Wallace Stevens Award was named after the famous American poet who, as a part-time teacher, promoted creativity in the classroom. Other nominees for the award were Kitty Merrill.
The Teresa Archuleta Award, named for the late EOPS counselor and coordinator who served Oxnard College for more than 20 years, recognizes the Outstanding Non-Teaching Academic Employee. Other nominees for the award were Toni Pineau and Ross Fontes.
The John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee was named after the brilliant English poet whose blindness was no handicap to his genius as an author and a statesman. Other nominees for this award were Nikki Cayanan, Jose Cornelio, Tina Sasaki, Harry Culotta, Veronica Allen, Della Rhodes, Felicia Torres, Connie Owens, Betty Hough, Valerie Lee, Liway Torres, Linda Callaway and Frances Lewis.

Each year organizations, business firms and individuals in our community sponsor scholarships for outstanding Oxnard College students. The following students have been selected to receive scholarships.
Memorial Scholarships
The EOPS-Teresa Archuleta Memorial Scholarship, named for the late EOPS director, was awarded to Marta Erazo; the Carlos Diaz Memorial Scholarship to Priscila Mosqueda; Nathaniel Ryan Klopmanbaerselman Memorial Scholarship for International Students to Korinne Ellis, Edwin Martinez, Dung Tran and Ayumi Maruno; the Adele Cunningham Memorial Scholarship to Angie Lomeli; the Daviene Warshawsky Memorial Scholarship to Nelly Pina; the Ron Jackson Memorial to Julie Johnson; and the Sylvia Watson Memorial to Ayasha Bonepart.
Community Organizations Scholarships
Oxnard/Hueneme Branch of the American Association of University Women to Sylvia Duarte; and the Oxnard/Hueneme Branch of the AAUW “In Honor of Florence England” to Xuemeng Wang; the Avelina Villalobos Scholarship/ Employers Advisory Council to Miguel A. Oviedo and Xuemeng Wang; and the Puente Projects Scholarships include the Rafael Guerrero Puente Scholarship to Maricela Gomez, who is also the recipient of the Frances & Frank Romero Puente Scholarship, the Pete Tafoya Puente Scholarship and the Mentor Council Scholarship.
The G.O.O.D. Club Scholarship (Greater Organization of Oxnard Democrats) recipients were Miguel Oviedo, Jose C. Noguez, Ayasha Bonepart and Dang Tran;
The Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) Strawberry Festival Scholarship was awarded to Regina Perkins; Samantha Krumdieck received the HRM Program Scholarship.
The Robert and Hope Holcomb Scholarship recipients were: Tania Aguilera, Ernesto Carrillo, Marta Erazo, Thao Luong, Miguel Oviedo, Teresa Telles, Dang Tran and Francisco V. Guzman.
Scholarships Awarded Prior to Today’s Ceremony
The California Society of CPAs, Channel Counties Chapter Scholarship to Daisy Rodriguez. Kenwood Scholarships awarded prior to today’s event by OC Music Instructor James Kenney were awarded to: Kelly Johnson and Chinatsu Ogawa.
