Beginning in the Fall of 2013, Oxnard College established the Oxnard College Institute for Latino Performing Arts. The Institute currently has three major components:
Latino Thought Makers Series http://latinothoughtmakers.com/
The first component of the OCILPA is the Latino Thought Makers Series, conceived by OCILPA Creative Director, Hollywood Actor/Author/Screenwriter/Director, Rick Najera. The inaugural season included conversations with best-selling author, Alisa Valdes and Hollywood Legend, Edward James Olmos, as well as performances of An Almost White Christmas, the CBS Diversity Comedy Showcase, and LatinoLogues. The second season brought Hollywood Actorvist, Esai Morales to the Oxnard College Performing Arts Center, as well as the kick off for a national tour of the musical It Gets Better.
One of Oxnard College's oldest and most loved groups is the OC Ballet Folklorico Mestizo which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011. (Mati Sánchez, Advisor). The group gave the first two performances in the College's Performing Arts Center and is one of the Center's artists in residence. The Ballet puts on a major production each semester on campus and performs at many events around the community such as the Annual Oxnard Tamale Festival.
Teatro de las Américas
Teatro de las Américas (http://teatrodelasamericas.org/) is a bilingual theater company that presents live-stage productions to diverse communities with an emphasis on Spanish language playwrights. In 2014, Oxnard College and the Teatro signed a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing the Teatro as an artist in residence at Oxnard College, making them the third active component of the OCILPA.
Starting Fall of 2016, Oxnard College will offer Theater Arts courses for the first time in nearly a decade. This will eventually lead to a robust Theater Arts Program and will become a fourth major component of the OCILPA.
